ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Thanksgiving meal prep is underway at the Rescue Mission of Roanoke as the holiday feast draws closer.
The Rescue Mission will be preparing 150 turkeys, as well as mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, and more.
According to the Roanoke Rescue Mission’s food service manager, Solomon Viera, he and his team are ready to serve around 450 meals on Thanksgiving morning to those in need.
Viera adds that he loves seeing the progress made by people who show up to the Rescue Mission looking to change their lives.
“Just watching them go from coming in off the street not having anything and really being super lost to leaving the program having a good head on their shoulders, it’s just phenomenal and, honestly, I cried when this last group left because they mean a lot to me, but I’m also super proud of them,” said Viera.
However, while the Rescue Mission is preparing for its big Thanksgiving Day feast, it also feeds hundreds of people every other day of the year.
Some of those people eat at the Rescue Mission, but hundreds of boxes of food are also prepared for people to pick up and take home.
Every Saturday, people who need a box can pick it up. Each box contains between 40 and 50 pounds of nutritious foods, free of charge.
According to a volunteer named Thomas, he came to the Rescue Mission seeking help at a low point in his life. However, he says his work is a way to give back and help others.
“How do you repay someone that saved your life? You can’t do it,” said Thomas. “But I’m just trying to help, any small amount that I can.”
WFXR is a proud media sponsor of the Drumstick Dash, which helps pay for a lot of the Rescue Mission’s food programs.
