Roanoke Police arrest man in November murder of Nathaniel Briggs

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police have announced the arrest of a Roanoke man in connection with the death of Nathaniel Briggs in November.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, 24-year-old Herbert Giddens, Jr. of Roanoke is being charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in Briggs’ death.

Police say the incident surrounding Giddens’ arrest involves a shooting that took place on Nov. 23, 2020, in the 2400 block of Centre Avenue NW. Officers found Briggs with what appeared to be serious injuries inside a residence in the area, but he was pronounced dead on scene by first responders.

During the investigation, detectives determined that Giddens was the suspect in the shooting and then presented the case to the February meeting of the Roanoke Grand Jury, where indictments were issued.

According to the department, Giddens was located on Tuesday, Feb. 2 and the indictments were served without incident.
