ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke County police officers responded to a call regarding a suicidal man in an apartment on Saturday.

According to the Roanoke County Police Department, officers were initially told that the man was in possession of a knife.

However, as police arrived at the apartment in the 3800 block of Sunhaven Court around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, they were told the man had a gun and the man’s wife was trying to get the gun away from him.

As authorities approached the apartment, they say they could hear a disturbance inside of the apartment and entered.

During the ensuing altercation, the department says an officer with Roanoke County fired a single shot, but nobody was injured as a result of the gunshot.

The man, who is currently not being identified, was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation, according to police.

No criminal charges are currently being placed.

Officials say the officer was placed on administrative leave — per department policy — and the incident is still under investigation by the Roanoke County police Department.
