SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Instead of decking the halls with boughs of holly, the City of Salem decided to spread holiday cheer by decking out the streets to celebrate the city’s annual Christmas tree lighting and parade.

The best part about the event on Friday, Dec. 3 was the weather, allowing hundreds to gather on West Main Street in Salem.

“This is so exciting, it’s promising, and it’s a real joy to be out here amongst everyone. The children are having a good time, and the weather couldn’t have been any better,” said Anita Reed, a paradegoer.

The smell of popcorn filled the streets, kids played in their favorite Christmas outfits, and parents danced around while enjoying the Christmas music.

Special event coordinator Ashley Pelletier says so much work went into creating this event for Salem.

“So we actually partner with Kiwanis Club of Salem on the parade, and they are awesome. They help with the event,” said Pelletier. “With police department, street department, fire department, everyone, it is definitely a city effort. So, we are really happy with their efforts combined to put this together.”

However, even before the parade, many gathered for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree at the Salem Farmers Market.

According to the director of the City of Salem’s Parks and Recreation Department, John Shaner, “I can’t tell you how tickled we are to see everyone out this year. This is the way we should be — have our streets full, have you all here, be in person.”

Salem Mayor Renee Turk also took to the mic to thank everyone for coming out and continuously spreading holiday cheer.
