ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Rescue Mission of Roanoke is holding an event on Saturday where teachers can pick up free school supplies for their students in need.

According to organizers, ‘Back 2 School Blast: Teachers Edition‘ will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 6 at Parkway Church on the Mountain along Orange Avenue NE, allowing local teachers to pick up pencils, crayons, paper, binders, backpacks, and more for certain students.

“This is an opportunity to make sure children in need in our area have the supplies to thrive in school,” said Stacy Boris from the Rescue Mission of Roanoke.

Rescue mission officials say they provide critical school supplies to children in need because they know the importance of being prepared in school and life. They add that the event is a tool to serve community members, but also to prevent homelessness and break the cycle of poverty.

“Showing up to school without proper supplies can exacerbate the stigma of poverty for students who may already feel like they are starting at a disadvantage. The Back 2 School Blast ensures that teachers can provide supplies to these students when they see a need,” the Rescue Mission of Roanoke’s community outreach manager, Kevin Berry, said.
