SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – On Tuesday, a memorial motorcade passed through southwest Virginia that was returning the body of a Salem hero who died in a helicopter crash back in August.

As the motorcade for Naval Air Crewman 2nd Class James Buriak rolled through the City of Salem and the campus of Roanoke College on Tuesday, Oct. 26, fire trucks formed what city officials called a “flag bridge” along Market Street.

Those who attended the procession gathered at several locations to pay their respects.

Buriak died on Aug. 31 after his Navy helicopter crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of southern California.

According to the City of Salem, Buriak graduated from Salem High School in 2008 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College in 2012.

Buriak leaves behind a wife and a son.

First responders from around southwest Virginia gathered to honor the fallen sailor as the motorcade passed through the region on the trip from Charlotte.
