Police warn of scam calls circulating around Salem involving ‘kidnapped relative’

Roanoke Valley News

SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Authorities in Salem are warning community members about a scam caller demanding gift cards in exchange for the release of a person claiming to be a kidnapped relative.

The Salem Police Department says citizens have reached out about a caller from a 529 area code pretending to be a relative and saying they have been kidnapped.

Citizens are reportedly told not to call the police and instead obtain gift cards to ensure their “relative’s” release.

However, according to police, this is a scam.

You are urged to hang up the phone immediately without giving anyone your personal information or buying any gift cards.

If you are uncertain about the legitimacy of the situation, the department says you can call (540) 375-3078 and ask to speak to an officer.
