UPDATE 2:37 p.m. (9/16/21): On Thursday afternoon, the Roanoke Police Department released the identity of the woman who died at the scene of a shooting early Wednesday morning in northwest Roanoke.
According to the department, officers were called out to a shooting with injuries in the 3900 block of Melworse Avenue NW at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 and found an unresponsive but critically injured woman in a vehicle. That woman — identified as 21-year-old Lindsey P. Shook of Troutville — was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say they also found a man inside a nearby business who was critically injured in the shooting. First responders brought that man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment, but there is no update on his condition at this time.
As of Thursday, Sept. 16, officials say this homicide investigation is still ongoing.

UPDATE 9:45 a.m.: Police are now classifying the overnight shooting in northwest Roanoke as a homicide after the shooting left one person dead and another in critical condition.
According to the Roanoke Police Department, word came in about a shooting with injuries in the 3900 block of Melrose Avenue NW at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
When police arrived at the scene, they say they found an unresponsive woman in a vehicle with what appeared to be critical injuries. However, Roanoke Fire-EMS pronounced the woman dead on scene.
Officials say they will not release the identity of this victim until they notify her next-of-kin.
In addition, officers reportedly found a man inside a nearby business who was critically injured in the shooting. First responders brought that man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The department says police did not find any suspects at the scene and have not made any arrests in connection with this ongoing homicide investigation.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police officers were called out to a northwest Roanoke gas station after a person was injured in an overnight shooting.
A member of the Roanoke Police Department told WFXR News that word came in at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 about reports of shots fired at the Shell gas station in the 3900 block of Melrose Avenue NW.
Police say one person was injured and brought to Carilion Hospital following the shooting, but there is no word on the nature of those injuries.
WFXR News’ Hazelmarie Anderson is currently at the scene and says a glass door at the gas station is shattered and that cars at the scene appear to have bullet holes in them.
As of this writing, authorities have not named any suspects in connection with this overnight incident.
However, a member of the Roanoke Police Department says the investigation into the shooting is still in the early stages.
