ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Roanoke Police Department alerted community members on Sunday after bears were spotted on opposite sides of the Star City.

According to the department, multiple calls came in about bear sightings in the areas near Hershberger Road NE and Carlton Road SW.

Police announced on Sunday, June 5 that they notified the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), who said they would respond as soon as possible.

Until the DWR responds, authorities urge anyone who lives near Hershberger Road NE or Carlton Road SW to keep small animals and children inside, as well as check your surroundings if you head outside.

In addition, if you happen to see any bears around Roanoke, you are asked to give them space and not approach them.
