UPDATE: Police share name of shooting victim found dead in northwest Roanoke Monday morning

UPDATE 4:11 p.m. (9/7/21): Authorities have shared the name of the victim from the Star City’s second homicide of the holiday weekend, who was found dead in northwest Roanoke early Monday morning.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, officers were called out to the 1500 block of Downing Street NW for a report of shots fired at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 6.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a man — identified as 51-year-old Poindexter D. Penny of Roanoke — laying in a parking lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS.

The investigation into this homicide is still ongoing as of Tuesday, Sept. 7.


ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police are investigating after a man was found dead in northwest Roanoke early Monday morning, marking the city’s second homicide in less than two days.

The Roanoke Police Department says word came in at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 about shots fired and a person down in the 1500 block of Downing Street NW.

When police arrived at the scene, they found an unresponsive man lying in a parking lot with what appeared to be critical injuries. First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Officials say they will not release the man’s identity until his next-of-kin has been contacted.

According to the department, police did not locate any suspects at the scene and have not made any arrests in connection with this ongoing homicide investigation.

This news comes after officers were called out to the 300 block of Harrison Avenue NW around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4 about a man with a gunshot wound. That man was also pronounced dead at the scene, authorities say.
