Police investigating large objects being thrown off Liberty Road bridge in Roanoke

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police have received multiple phone calls over the last several weeks from drivers saying their cars have been hit with large items under the Liberty Road bridge on I-581 in Roanoke.

Lt. Eric Thiel with the Roanoke Police Department says these incidents are not harmless pranks and should be taken seriously.

“This isn’t an egg that can be washed off or sprayed off,” said Thiel. “If there’s a car on I-581 going 55 mph, even a brick or a rock that size can kill someone.”

Thiel says that just throwing the rock alone at an occupied vehicle can result in a felony. The consequences can be even more serious if someone is killed, no matter the age of the person who threw the object.

“If someone is killed, you’re looking at murder charges for the action,” said Thiel.

Authorities say they recently spotted two teenagers at the bridge, but they left the scene and got away.

If you saw or took video of the teenagers throwing rocks off the bridge, you are asked to reach out to the Roanoke Police Department immediately.
