FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Franklin County authorities are investigating several cases of phone scams where the caller poses as a member of the sheriff’s office and tries to extort money.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the caller will attempt to obtain money or financial information from the resident by saying they are calling because the resident has missed jury duty or are facing outstanding warrants related to court fines.

“Our deputies have taken several complaints in the last few days concerning these type calls. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office does not call and ask residents to rectify issues by sending us money,” said Sheriff Bill Overton. “If you receive a call like this, please hang up and call us. We are currently working several of these type cases to see if their origin is local.”

If you think you have received one of these scam calls, hang up immediately and contact the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office at (540) 483-3000.
