ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police say a man and two dogs are dead after being shot in a northwest Roanoke home on Saturday.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, the Roanoke Police Department says word came in about a person with a gunshot wound in the 800 block of Hershberger Road NW.

When police arrived, they found a man with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Roanoke Fire-EMS, but his name will not be released until his family is notified, officials say.

In addition to the man, authorities tell WFXR News they found two dogs who had been shot, one of whom died at the scene while the other was brought to an emergency veterinary facility, where it was also pronounced dead.

The department says a suspect in this active homicide investigation has been taken into custody, adding that the suspect and the victim knew each other.

According to police, there is no ongoing threat to the public following this shooting.
