BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WXFR) — After a police chase from Roanoke City to Botetourt County ended with the driver dead and a passenger injured, parents were rerouted to pick up their children at a nearby daycare.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, a call came in about a man with a gun at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 7 who drove off from the 4600 block of Long Acre Drive NE.

Police say they pursued the man until he crashed in the 3100 block of Read Mountain Road in Botetourt County, just a few hundred yards from Mini-World Child Care Center. The driver reportedly took his own life, but the passenger was taken to the hospital.

One Mini-World parent says she believes the children were unaware of anything happening, but she’s sad the incident ended the way it did.

Meanwhile, another parent, Rene Roberts, says it was shocking to see the crash so close to the daycare and learn everything that happened.

“My first instinct was ‘oh my God, my children,’ because it literally was right there in front of Mini-World,” Roberts told WFXR News. “Terrifying…my first thought was actually terrifying.”

Both parents say Mini-World did a great job sheltering the kids from what happened.

Still, Roberts says it’s scary sending her child to daycare nowadays given amid the recent mass shootings, so she’s just glad all the students are okay.
