‘Pack the Bus’ school supply drive kicking off in Franklin County

Roanoke Valley News

(WFXR) – The United Way of Roanoke Valley is teaming up with Franklin County Public Schools to offer businesses and the community in Franklin County to participate in this year’s “Pack the Bus.”

Businesses across the area will have donation boxes on display during the week of Monday, Aug. 2.

School supplies can be dropped off at any of these locations, as well as at Franklin County High School during a special celebration on Friday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Organizers say that for around $20, you can fill a backpack with lots of items that children will need when heading back to school.

Supplies most in-need include:

  • Pencils
  • Pens
  • Paper
  • Notebooks
  • Three-ring binders
  • Twin pocket folders
  • Zippered pencil pounces
  • Gallon and quart-sized plastic baggies
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Rulers
  • Tape
  • Glue sticks
  • Backpacks

“The effort this year is really important, considering the toll the past year took on area families. We’re hearing that there’s an increase in need this year, especially among students coming from lower-income, yet hard-working households where parents are really struggling to make ends meet.”

Alisha Childress, Vice President of Resource Development at United Way of Roanoke Valley

All donated school supplies will remain in Franklin County and will be handed out to students in all grade levels.

If you or your business is interested in hosting a dropbox or to donate funds to purchase supplies, call the United Way of Roanoke Valley at (540) 777-4214.
