UPDATE: Tractor-trailer crash cleared on Route 220 in Franklin County, driver injured

UPDATE 5:26 a.m. (12/3/21): VDOT says crews have cleared the scene of Thursday evening’s tractor-trailer crash in Franklin County after it caused numerous lane closures along Route 220 and sent a driver to the hospital.


UPDATE 9:10 p.m.: Motorists on Route 220 in Franklin County near Boones Mill can still expect delays caused by an earlier tractor-trailer crash.

The southbound left lane remains closed, and there are alternating lane closures for tractor-trailer traffic for those traveling north.

Traffic backups are now estimated to be about half a mile.


UPDATE 7:30 p.m.: An overturned tractor-trailer that was carrying lumber just north of Boones Mill continues to cause traffic backups on Route 220.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 5:18 p.m. after the truck driver lost control and overturned while traveling north on Route 220. The tractor-trailer driver was brought to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

VDOT says all northbound lanes are closed until the debris can be removed. The southbound left shoulder and left lane are also closed. Congestion on Route 220 is at an estimated three miles.


FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — According to Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), an overturned tractor-trailer in the vicinity of Naff Road and Route 613 is causing congestion on parts of Route 220 in Franklin County.

All northbound lanes are closed, along with one southbound lane. VDOT’s Salem District says northbound traffic is currently backed up for three miles.

Responders are on scene. Detours are being put in place.

Motorists are asked to seek alternate routes if possible.
