Overnight crash in Franklin County leaves one man dead, State Police say

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A police investigation is underway after a fatal crash took place in Franklin County overnight.

Virginia State Police say the single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18 along Virginia H. Goode Highway, approximately a tenth of a mile north of Doe Run Road.

According to authorities, a 2003 GMC Sonoma was heading north along Route 220 when it ran off the left side of the road and hit the guardrail.

The driver of the GMC — identified by police as 71-year-old Cleo Ray Sloan of Rocky Mount — was wearing his seatbelt at the time, but still died at the scene of the wreck.

Officials say they are still investigating this fatal crash.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced at 12:42 a.m. on Thursday that a crash took place on Route 220 North in Franklin County, but that no travel lanes were closed. The scene was then cleared by 3:36 a.m.
