ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police in Roanoke say one woman is dead, two men were brought to the hospital, and charges are pending after a string of crashes along Orange Avenue Thursday night.
According to the Roanoke Police Department, word came in of a hit-and-run at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14 near the area of Orange Avenue and Plantation Road NE.
When officers responded to the scene, they found one damaged vehicle. The vehicle’s occupants — both of whom refused transportation to the hospital — told police a vehicle hit theirs before driving west on Orange Avenue NE.
While police were at the scene, they learned of another vehicle crash at the intersection of Orange
Avenue and Gainsboro Road NW that was possibly related to the hit-and-run.
The department says the officers who responded to the crash in northwest Roanoke discovered three vehicles, each of which were significantly damaged. However, one of the vehicles involved in this crash reportedly matched the description of the suspect vehicle from the hit-and-run.
Police say first responders brought a seriously injured woman — who was found inside one of the vehicles — to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Officials say they will not release this woman’s identity until after they make proper notifications.
Meanwhile, authorities say a man from another vehicle involved in the crash was also transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital by Roanoke Fire-EMS with what appeared to be serious yet non-life threatening injuries.
According to the department, the driver of the suspect vehicle from the hit-and-run was also located on scene of the second crash. This man was transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a medical assessment. However, as soon as he is released from the hospital, police say they will serve arrest warrants in connection with the charges pending from the incident.
Officials say this incident is being investigated as a traffic fatality.
