UPDATE 5:01 a.m. (8/30/22): The Roanoke Police Department has released the identity of the man who died following a shooting in the northwestern part of the city over the weekend.

According to officials, 25-year-old Octavius Z. Cooke of Rocky Mount was found critically injured in a parking lot after officers responded to a report of a shooting around 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 in the 1900 block of 10th Street NW. That man later died from his injuries.

However, authorities have yet to release the name of the second man who was shot and arrived at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Sunday morning with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the investigation indicates both men were involved in an incident that took place outside of the business in the 1900 block of 10th Street NW.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A homicide investigation is underway following a Sunday morning shooting in northwest Roanoke that left one man dead and another one hurt.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, the Roanoke Police Department says word came in about a person with a gunshot wound in the 1900 block of 10th Street NW.

When officers responded to the call, they found a man with what appeared to be critical injuries in the parking lot of a business in the area, according to authorities.

Police say they provided aid at the scene until Roanoke Fire-EMS arrived and brought the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. However, the man — whose identity will not be released until his family is notified — later died from his injuries.

During this call, authorities tell WFXR News they were notified that another man with gunshot wounds had arrived at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in a personal vehicle. Additional officers were dispatched to the hospital to speak with the man, who had what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the department, the preliminary investigation indicates both men were involved in an incident that took place outside of the business in the 1900 block of 10th Street NW.

As of this writing, police say no arrests have been made in connection with this ongoing homicide investigation.
