UPDATE 11:25 a.m. (2/17/22): Several days after a man died at the hospital following a weekend shooting in southwest Roanoke, authorities released the name of the victim.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, 21-year-old Arnez A. Kirtley of Roanoke was found with a critical gunshot wound inside a home in the 1200 block of Jefferson Street SW on Saturday, Feb. 12. He later died from his injuries at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

This news comes after police arrested a man — 21-year-old Bryson W. Berger of Roanoke — in connection with the homicide investigation on Sunday, Feb. 13.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A man was arrested for murder early Sunday morning after another man died following a shooting in southwest Roanoke late Saturday night.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, word came in at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12 about a person with a gunshot wound in the 1200 block of Jefferson Street SW.

When police arrived at the scene, they say they found a man inside a home in the area with what appeared to be a critical injury. First responders brought the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Officials say they will not share the man’s name until after his next-of-kin is notified.

While details about what led up to the shooting are still limited at this time, the department says the investigation led to 21-year-old Bryson W. Berger of Roanoke, being identified as a suspect.

According to authorities, they obtained warrants for second-degree murder shortly after Berger was identified. The man was then taken into custody without incident on Sunday, Feb. 13.

Roanoke City Jail records say Berger is being held without bond for non-capital second-degree murder.
