ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — More than 700 Appalachian Power customers in northwest Roanoke — more specifically, in the area between the Valley View Mall and the Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Airport — are currently affected by two large outages.

According to Appalachian Power, the first outage is affecting 666 customers while the second outage is affecting 79 customers as of 12:43 p.m. on Thursday, April 7.

The first outage was reported at 12:08 p.m. while the second outage was reported a minute later, but the company expects crews will restore power to the impacted customers by 5:30 p.m.

Appalachian Power did not list a cause for either outage.

Meanwhile, the Roanoke Police Department says that several red lights in northwest Roanoke are currently out of service because of an outage. The affected intersections are listed below:

  • Ring Road NW and Valley View Boulevard NW (near Dick’s Sporting Goods)
  • Ring Road NW and Valley View Boulevard NW (near Chick-fil-A)
  • Hershberger Road NW and Rutgers Street NW

According to police, barricades are currently in place but the lights are expected to be out of service for several hours. During this period, drivers are asked to use extreme caution and treat the afore-mentioned intersections like four-way stops.
