UPDATE 5:45 p.m.: VDOT has announced that the second crash on I-81 south has been cleared in Botetourt County.
Traffic will likely still be a bit congested in the area due to normal evening commuter traffic flows, but all lanes are fully open on I-81 south in Botetourt County.
UPDATE 5:25 p.m.: One of the two crashes on I-81 south has been cleared.
According to VDOT, the crash at mile marker 147.6 is no longer causing issues for drivers.
The crash at mile marker 148.1; however, is still slowing commuters.
Backups here are approaching three miles, says VDOT.
UPDATE 5:10 p.m.: Two crashes on I-81 just over one mile apart from each other, is slowing traffic.
VDOT says the crash at mile marker 148.1 has backups of approximately two miles. The south right shoulder is still closed in this area.
Just past that crash, one at mile marker 147.6 (adjusted from the earlier report that the crash was at mile marker 145), has the southbound left shoulder, right lane and right shoulder all closed. Backups here are approaching the site of the other crash at mile marker 148.1.
Drivers can expect continued delays in this area.
BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – A multi-vehicle crash is slowing traffic on a stretch of I-81 south in Botetourt County.
According to VDOT, the crash is located at mile marker 148.1 on the southbound side where the right lane and right shoulder are closed.
Traffic is moving through the area, but expect a slow crawl as crews work to clean up the crash.
Also, a multi-vehicle crash is located at mile marker 145 – also in the southbound side of I-81. This crash is just past the Botetourt County line into Roanoke County.
Here, the southbound left shoulder, right lane and right shoulder are closed.
Drivers can expect delays if traveling in this area.
