Mother of woman found dead in Roanoke County pleads for answers

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A mother is pleading for help and looking for justice after her daughter was found dead in a remote area of Roanoke County on Monday afternoon.

The Roanoke County Police Department says the body of 28-year-old Kayla Nicole Sumner of Roanoke, was discovered in the 8800 block of Brush Mountain Road on Monday, Nov. 8 after a citizen called the Emergency Communications Center about the body.

“You wouldn’t leave her nude in the woods, with no identification, no purse, nothing,” said Sumner’s mother, Belinda Ayers. “They even took her phone.”

Now, Ayers is left with a lot of questions as she holds onto the memories of her daughter.

According to Ayers, the last time she saw her daughter was a few months ago. She says Sumner was addicted to drugs and knew the life she was living would get her into trouble.

“I had taken her some money for her motel room. I had taken her, her clothes, dresses, and socks. I bought her drink items and dropped it off,” Ayers said

Ayers told WFXR News she was worried about the choices Sumner had made, but never imagined that would be the last time she saw her daughter alive.

“She was very hardheaded, she was very headstrong, would not listen to anyone,” said Ayers, “and I told her one day I would get that knock on the door or that phone call because of the lifestyle that she chose to live.”

No matter what, though, Ayers says Sumner was her daughter and losing her is one of the hardest things she has gone through.

The mother hopes people — especially the 6-year-old daughter that Sumner left behind — remember Sumner as a outspoken, outgoing, and fun person who was surrounded by nothing but friends.

Ayers says the police have some leads about what happened to her daughter, but will not share them with anyone at this time.

If you have any information about Sumner’s death, you are asked to call the Roanoke County Police Department at 540-562-3265.
