Mill Mountain Zoo offers entertaining way to encourage young learners with ‘Tails in the Mail’ program

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The school year may be over — or, for some, almost over — but the Mill Mountain Zoo is ready to help kids continue learning during the summer months with the “Tails in the Mail” subscription box program.

From June through August, the Mill Mountain Zoo will put together a specially-themed box each month that highlights one of the zoo’s animal residents, featuring a toy not sold in the gift shop, a postcard, a recipe card, a craft, a magnet, an animal trading card, activity sheets, a “Tails in the Mail” button, and a book. Those boxes will then be mailed to program participants.

“Our goal is to keep children learning over the summer in a fun, engaging way,” the Mill Mountain Zoo said in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 9. “They can learn about their favorite animal at home then visit the Zoo to reinforce what they learned.”

The zoo says the boxes will be geared towards three reading levels: Pre-Readers (Hatchling), Readers (Cub), and Advanced Readers (Pup).

The program costs $30 per month plus $7.99 for shipping and handling, or you can sign up for all three months for $75 plus the monthly $7.99 shipping and handling fees. Here are the relevant dates for the program:

  • June box (snow leopard): Order by June 21 and your box will ship on/by June 30.
  • July box (black bear): Order by July 20 and your box will ship on/by July 31.
  • August box (snakes): Order by Aug. 20 and your box will ship on/by Aug. 31.
