ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The most poisonous animal on the planet is not a snake, scorpion, or spider, according to officials at the Mill Mountain Zoo. It is a frog.

The Golden Poison Frog is originally from Central and South America, but now it’s at the Mill Mountain Zoo.

According to a release, the Golden Poison Frog is so poisonous it contains enough poison to kill ten people or 20,000 mice. They say even touching the frog can be dangerous. The release states the toxins in the frog come from the food they eat in the wild.

A representative with the zoo says the Golden Poison Frog is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list of threatened species. They say the frog is on the list because of habitat loss from deforestation, mining, and quarrying.
