ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Mayor Sherman Lea appeared in northwest Roanoke Friday morning to help celebrate the grand opening of a new gas station and convenience store.

“We’re excited to bring this state-of-the-art Shell-Chester’s station to your neighborhood and can’t wait to welcome you,” organizers said in a flyer for the event.

The gas station and convenience store is located at 1919 10th Street NW.

Organizers tell WFXR News that there used to be a gas station and convenience store on 10th Street — about half a mile away from the new Shell-Chester’s site — that was vital to the community, but it was demolished in 2013 through eminent domain, so this area has been underserved since then.
