ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Friday, May 7 is National Lunch Hero Day!

While not all heroes wear capes, one hero at Glenvar Elementary School did pull her cape out for the occasion.

Julie Brock is one of many school nutrition workers making the best of their job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To keep students from going hungry, these school nutrition workers operated through the summer and plan to do the same for 2021.

Currently, all school lunches are free from Roanoke County Public Schools students.

“It feels really good and I like to wear my cape so I just think it’s fun,” Brock told WFXR News. “We do a lot of dressing up here when we can and this year has been different. I miss that part take some of the fun away and the kids enjoy it, so it’s nice to dress us a little bit.”

The Roanoke County School District recently hit a huge milestone. The district distributed one million meals to students from March 2020 to March 2021.
