ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Nearly four months after a woman was found dead outside of a southeast Roanoke home, police say a man is in custody for multiple charges, including murder.

According to the Roanoke Police Department, officers responded to a suspicious call with injuries in the 3500 block of Yellow Mountain Road SE at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 10.

The department says 23-year-old Brooks M. Mullen of Roanoke, was found lying outside of a home, unresponsive and apparently injured, before first responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Several months later, police say the Roanoke City Grand Jury held their May meeting and issued indictments of first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony against 30-year-old Lavon M. Belcher of Roanoke, in connection with Mullen’s death.

“Belcher was identified as a suspect throughout the course of the investigation,” the Roanoke Police Department said in a statement on Thursday, May 5. “Once the indictments were issued, we worked with the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate Mr. Belcher.”

Belcher was tracked down at a Roanoke home, where authorities say they served the indictments and took him into custody without incident on Tuesday, May 3.

As of Thursday, police say this investigation is still ongoing.
