ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Exactly one week after discovering a woman’s body in a southeast Roanoke park, police announced that a man had been taken into custody on a murder charge.

The Roanoke Police Department says word came in about a “suspicious situation” in Belmont Park at approximately 4:21 a.m. on Friday, July 22.

When officers responded, they found an injured and unresponsive woman — identified by officials as 37-year-old Leeann Amber Haun of Roanoke — who was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, an autopsy report determined Haun’s cause of death to be a gunshot wound.

Then, on Friday, July 29, authorities announced they arrested 26-year-old Richard Quarles and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with Haun’s death. He is reportedly being held without bond at the Roanoke City Jail.

The department says the investigation into Haun’s deadly shooting is still ongoing.
