ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Community members in the North Lakes neighborhood of Roanoke County say it’s usually a quiet area, but that wasn’t the case Friday night.
What started off as a normal night for Anderson Cizmowski quickly turned into a night she’ll never forget.
Cizmowski says she was taking care of a friend’s pets while she was away.
“A friend of mine actually lives in this neighborhood,” said Cizmowski. “I was coming in for the night to check on her pets, to let them out, and do the normal pet sitting stuff.”
She never expected to see what came next — the neighborhood surrounded with crime scene tape, police cars lined up, and many law enforcement officers focusing on a nearby house with guns drawn.
“I saw the house that they were at. There was a light beam flashing at the house,” Cizmowski said.
According to the Roanoke County Police Department, officers set up a perimeter in the 4900 block of Lantern Street after being called out at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 for a report of a domestic dispute with a weapon.
Police say a man inside the home had been non-compliant with officers before unexpectedly exiting the home and engaging with one of the officers. That’s when two gunshots were fired.
“I heard shots were fired. That was a bit scary,” said Cizmowski.
The man — identified by authorities as 52-year-old Shawn Alan Smith of Roanoke County — died from his injuries. However, no officers were hurt in the incident.
After everything ended, Cizmowski says she returned to her normal routine.
“I could tell the situation was handled though,” added Cizmowski.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
