Friday morning crash in Franklin County leaves Moneta woman dead, State Police say

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A driver is dead, but a passenger is unharmed after a car crashed into a fence in Franklin County Friday morning, authorities say.

According to Virginia State Police, the fatal crash took place at approximately 7:22 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 9 along Morewood Road, near Chestnut Creek Drive.

Police say a Toyota Camry was speeding west on Morewood Road when the driver lost control, ran off the right side of the road, and hit a fence.

The Toyota’s driver — identified by authorities as 25-year-old Melissa Faye Leonard of Moneta — was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, but she died at the scene.

Meanwhile, officials say the male passenger was also wearing his seatbelt and was not injured in the wreck.

According to police, this fatal crash is still under investigation.
