UPDATE: Franklin County authorities find Florida man who went missing in Moneta

UPDATE 2:55 p.m.: Franklin County authorities announced Thursday afternoon that the Florida man who disappeared in Moneta on Wednesday was tracked down in the nearby area.

“The Office of the Sheriff would like to thank Franklin County Department of Public Safety, Scruggs Volunteer Fire & Rescue and additional area search agencies that coordinated through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management for all of their search efforts in locating Mr. Maffei,” the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office wrote on Facebook.


FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help tracking down a Florida man who went missing on Wednesday in the Moneta area.

According to the sheriff’s office, 36-year-old Matthew Carl Maffei of Jacksonville, Florida was last seen walking from Sailors Cove Drive in the Bernard’s Landing area on Wednesday, Oct. 13.

Authorities describe Maffei as being approximately 5’9″ tall; weighing about 220 pounds; and wearing a black long sleeve shirt with a Florida logo, a green undershirt, black shorts, and gray running shoes. In addition, he has tattoos of an eagle, a baseball bat, and American flag on his left arm.

Officials told WFXR News that Maffei is the same person for whom the Franklin County Department of Public Safety’s Special Operations Team is searching in the Bernard’s Landing area.
