BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Customers and employees at a Daleville Kroger Monday night experience quite a scare after hearing there was an armed robbery and a bomb threat at the grocery store.
The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office says a Kroger store clerk called at approximately 7:22 p.m. on Monday, May 23, saying that a man approached a cashier with a bag — which reportedly contained an explosive device — and demanded money. After he received the cash, the man ran off, leaving behind the bag with the alleged explosive.
“I come here very often. It’s very surprising that something like this would happen. You don’t hear about it much in Botetourt,” said shopper Emma Mattox.
Savannah Cox — who lives in Roanoke County but reportedly got a job in Botetourt County to avoid such incidents — was working the night shift at Three Li’l Pigs BBQ across the parking lot from Kroger at the time of the robbery.
“All of our customers were standing up, they were like, ‘what’s going on?'” said Cox.
After the grocery store was evacuated so authorities could investigate the bag, Cox says an anxious teenage boy went to Three Li’l Pigs for an order, but when servers asked if he was alright, he told them he had just been robbed while working his shift as a cashier at Kroger.
“He told me… he just wanted him to get out. He was nervous, but he just didn’t want to freak out and freak everybody else out,” Cox added.
Authorities tell WFXR News that witnesses reported the robber was wearing a light gray sweatshirt, black pants, and dark-colored sunglasses with a white bandana covering his face. In addition, he was seen leaving the parking lot in a gray-colored sedan — which witnesses say could be a BMW — without a front license plate.
Virginia State Police say the contents of the bag were non-explosive, adding that everything found was turned over to the sheriff’s office as evidence in this ongoing investigation.
“I hope they catch the man,” Cox said. “Even if it wasn’t real, I feel like it still felt scary to the people that work there.”
If you have any information about the robbery — or if you saw the vehicle or the man in question in the Kroger parking lot — you are asked to call Detective Sgt. Hosey at 540-928-2243.
