SALEM, Va. (WFXR) – Feeding Southwest Virginia recently wrapped up its participation in the 15th annual statewide “Legal Food Frenzy.”
A total of 21 law offices and organizations in the region joined in the friendly competition, hosting a variety of creative activities designed to raise food and funds for their local food bank.
Together, these organizations raised over $41,000 to support Feeding Southwest Virginia in 2021.
Statewide, all firms participating raised over $350,000 or the equivalent of 1.4 million pounds of food for all seven Virginia Federation Food Banks.
At a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, June 17, Commonwealth Attorney General Mark Herring presented awards to three different firms from southwest Virginia — the first time the region has had three contributing firms recognized for outstanding generosity in the same year.
This also marks the first time a participating law firm from Southwest Virginia has ever won the campaign’s top award, “The Attorney General’s Cup.”
This year’s Legal Food Frenzy winners from southwest Virginia:
- Attorney General’s Cup (overall, statewide winner, 5+ employees): The Law Office of James Steel PLLC won the award by raising over $12,000 during this year’s campaign, or the rough equivalent of 6,000 pounds of food per employee. The Law Office of James Steele is the first such winner from SWVA.
- Statewide Large Firm Per Capita Winner (100+ employees): Gentry Locke Attorneys also won their category for most funds raised per capita in the Commonwealth by any large firm, helping to provide the equivalent of approximately 419 pounds of food per employee.
- FSWVA Regional Award Winner (<100 employees): Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, in their first year participating in the campaign, won the regional award for SWVA among firms with less than 100 employees, helping to raise the equivalent of 543 pounds of food per employee.
“2021’s Legal Food Frenzy has been the biggest ever for Feeding Southwest Virginia. We so appreciate our local legal organizations joining the fight against hunger in our region in such a big way especially this year. Their generosity will make a lasting difference in the lives of others.”Pamela Irvine, Feeding Southwest Virginia CEO
Statewide and regional award categories recognized offices that raised the most support on a per capita basis. Support was measured by both the amount of money raised and by points earned through early registration and referral of new participants to the campaign.
Legal Food Frenzy is a statewide food and fund drive taking place each April with support from the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia, the Virginia Bar Association Division of Young Lawyers and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
