ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Parents are always trying to find some way to spend time with their children and bond, whether over a sport, television show, or food. One Roanoke father is bonding with his son over their love of music.
Pediatricians say maintaining that strong bond with your child is important for their development.
Eight-year-old Jax and his dad Stephen — known in the music biz as Grand Master Jax and Old Dirty Da-Da — make up the father-son comedy rap duo, Knuckleheadz.
The pair has been laying tracks for over five years, since Jax was 2-years-old.
“We have two albums and we’re, like, halfway done with the third, I think,” said Jax.
In the beginning, Stephen took a chance and wrote their first song.
“It’s called na-na-na-na boo-boo, stick your head in do-do,” said Stephen.
He sent the song to someone who has an eye for talent, comedy radio legend Dr. Demento, who discovered Weird Al Yankovic.
“He loved it,” Stephen said. “And we have been on Dr. Demento his top 10 list every couple of weeks for the last few months.”
Knuckleheadz is sharing the charts on Dr. Demento’s list with some heavy favorites, like Weird Al and Frank Zappa.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Stephen.
However, for Stephen, it’s not about topping the charts; it’s about the time he get’s to spend with his son.
“That’s how me and him bond, I think like neither one of us are very good at sports,” Stephen explained. “We don’t play a lot of sports or things like that. And I think that’s how a lot of fathers and sons bond, but we, we bond through music.”
“The fun part is on when they’re done we get to listen to them in the car and see what they sound like,” said Jax.
While the songs are about having fun, there’s one that stands out.
“I do have one song, ‘Turtles Have Short Legs’, which is about just kind of being yourself, being, uh, don’t be afraid to be creative. Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” Stephen said.
That is a lesson Stephen hopes Jax carries with him forever.
