ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Members of the Star City community are invited to celebrate fall with friends and neighbors on Friday during the Eureka Fall Festival, which is free and open to the public!

From 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, Roanoke Parks and Recreation will be set up at Eureka Park with a number of attractions, including the following:

  • Lawn games
  • Activities from Ferguson Fitness
  • A life-sized Hungry Hippo
  • Disc golf
  • A climbing wall
  • Pizza and candy

Then, once it gets dark outside, you can settle in by the bonfire, roast s’mores, and watch “Hocus Pocus” on the big screen in the park. However, you need to bring your own chairs and blankets.

According to Roanoke officials, this festival is a part of the “Star City Safe” initiative, which not only focuses on expanded services and access to public facilities to keep Roanoke’s youth and neighborhoods safe, but it also includes a variety of in-person and virtual formats to keep a two-way dialogue going between the city and the community.

“The Star City Safe initiative has provided our Department with a small financial boost to offer more recreational opportunities to the neighborhoods we serve,” said Michael Clark, director of Roanoke Parks and Recreation. “We are excited to get these programs and events up and running, and hope we can continue to offer these vital services in the future.”

The department’s park planning coordinator will also be on hand to discuss the plans for the Eureka Recreation Center as part of the Reimagine Recreation campaign.

“We’re so excited to host the Eureka Fall Festival this year,” said Susan Herndon-Powell, Youth Development Coordinator. “This will be a great time for our after school program and the community to come together and celebrate all things fall!”

In addition, according to organizers, representatives for Roanoke Public Libraries, United Way, TAP, and the Gun Violence Task Force will also be present to provide information to community members about programs and ways to get involved in these programs.
