ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Despite the unique challenges of 2020, thousands of people still came out for the Roanoke Rescue Mission’s annual Drumstick Dash.

“They knew that it was important and they were here for us,” said Kevin Berry, Director of the Drumstick Dash.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organization’s event had to undergo several changes. It’s typically held every year on Thanksgiving day in downtown Roanoke, with thousands of participants running for a cause.

This year, it was held virtually throughout November and December. People were able to walk or run, wherever they wanted.

Approximately 5,060 people participated in the virtual event and more than $200,000 dollars were raised.

“That was not just from race registration, but that was also from members of the community who are donating money above and beyond their race registration which really was an amazing thing to see,” said Berry.

Melanie Crovo has participated in the Dash for more than five years. She often walks with her dog, Deucy. But this year, she decided to get others involved. She even joined another community group, I Heart SE.

“We saw a lot of other people out there in their t-shirts, walking that day which was really neat to see other families that were out there walking on the greenway and through the neighborhood,” Crovo said.

She often enjoys helping people in need.

The Drumstick Dash is often a charitable cause she focuses on as a local business owner. Crovo and her partner operate Chillin’ Shaved Ice in Roanoke.

“Part of what we like to do, as a part of our business model, is to do something every month to contribute to the neighborhood or to Roanoke,” said Crovo.

She says she’s already looking forward to this year’s dash.

“Who knows if it will be safe to do it in-person again, maybe not, but once it is, we’ll definitely go back to the in-person,” Crovo said. “The virtual was really fun to and I would do it again.”

The money raised will go directly to the non-profit organization and the many services it provides, including free meals and recovery programs.
