ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Don Butzer, chairman of the Roanoke County School Board and Catawba District member, announced Thursday that he will be resigning from his post on the school board effective June 10.

He says his resignation is due to an upcoming move to northern Virginia.

“Serving on the school board has been an honor and personally fulfilling,” Butzer said.

Butzer was appointed to the Roanoke County School Board in July 2016 to serve a portion of the unexpired term for the Catawba District seat. He was then elected to serve a full term in November 2016 and was re-elected in 2020.

According to school officials, Butzer served as vice-chair in 2018 then served as chairman in 2019, a portion of 2020, and 2021 until his resignation in June.

Butzer had previously announced he would not seek re-election.

The school board will reported select someone to replace Butzer until the election in November.

Roanoke County Public Schools says applicants for the open seat will be submitted to the chairman of the school board and the candidates will be interviewed in a public setting.
