UPDATE 10:45 a.m. — The Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department releasing new information about a tanker crash that closed down an intersection in the county.

The scene is cleared after crews from Roanoke County Fire and Rescue and police responded to the incident earlier Thursday morning.

According to Roanoke County Fire and Rescue, they were able to pump the remaining fuel from the truck. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and other contractors will now handle the clean-up process.

While this clean-up continues, officials say that traffic could be impacted in the area until Friday.

The Virginia Department of Transportation, VDEM, the Roanoke Valley Regional Haz-Mat Team which includes the Roanoke FireEMS Department and Salem Fire & EMS Department as well as WEL Inc. Environmental Services all helped with this incident.



Roanoke County, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke County officials are warning drivers to avoid the intersection of Williamson Road and Peters Creek Road.

At 5:15 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, the intersection was closed due to a tractor-trailer crash. Roanoke County Fire and Rescue says a diesel tanker truck completely overturned. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials have not said how long the area will be blocked, but say drivers should seek alternative routes.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management, as well as Haz Mat teams and a clean-up contractor, are heading to the scene.
