UPDATE 10:59 a.m.: About five hours after crews were called out to a Friday morning house fire in southwest Roanoke, officials announced that Main Street SW and Wasena Avenue are back open.

In addition, Roanoke Fire-EMS says there were two dogs inside the home when the blaze broke out. One of the dogs survived and is currently with its owner, but the other one was found dead.

Meanwhile, a cat is reportedly still missing.

The cause of Friday morning’s fire is still under investigation.


UPDATE 9:13 a.m.: Roanoke fire officials have released additional information about Friday morning’s fire that damaged a home in the southwestern part of the city.

According to Roanoke Fire-EMS, units were dispatched at approximately 5:50 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 21 to the 800 block of Wasena Avenue SW for a report of a fire inside a home.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found flames coming from the second floor of the house, as well as three residents who were evacuating on their own.

The department says the fire quickly extended to an attic space, which contained a large amount of storage materials but had very limited access. However, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

There is no word on whether anyone was injured in the fire, but personnel at the scene confirmed to WFXR News Friday morning that nobody died in the blaze.

Crews also told WFXR News that they were searching for a pet that had been inside the hours when the fire broke out.

As of this writing, Roanoke Fire-EMS says crews are still on scene as the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Dispatch tells WFXR News that the fire was called in at approximately 5:50 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 21 from the intersection of Main Street SW and Wasena Avenue SW.

There is no word whether anyone was inside the home when the fire broke out, or what started the blaze in the first place.
