The Roanoker Restaurant responds to online rumors about closure

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — There have been social media postings saying the Roanoker Restaurant, a community staple, is closing.

The rumors are not true, according to owner Butch Craft. However, Craft says that running the restaurant during the pandemic has been stressful, making her re-evaluate its future.

“You cannot find enough help. We are still closed in our dining rooms at night which is just bizarre,” said Craft.

Craft took over as owner 52 years ago and has not had to encounter circumstances like these, including product shortages and a lack of help.

“You evaluate the business and your part in the business and how much more stress you can put on yourself,” Craft explained. “That’s the biggest issue.”

Monique Pannell, staffing coordinator of Luttrell Staffing Group in Roanoke, says the continued issues for many businesses can be tied to fear.

“What I’ve noticed is a lot of fear, to be honest with you, from the aspect of the employees and employers,” said Pannell.

Pannell thinks employers have to try a new approach if they want more employees to work for them.

“If they do not incorporate great soft skills and empathy in their process, they will lose candidates,” she said.

As for Craft, she says the restaurant is not closing in December, but it’s not out of the question in the future.

If she ever did decide to close, she would sell it, but there’s just one problem.

“I don’t know if I would trust anybody to run it. So there you go,” said Craft.

The Roanoker will not host a dine-in experience this year due to the staffing issues, but have already distributed 1,200 meals to those ordering for Thanksgiving.
