SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Since September is “Hunger Action Month,” Feeding America is working all throughout the month to help combat the hunger crisis that challenges many Americans.

The CEO of Feeding America spoke at the Feeding Southwest Virginia luncheon on Friday, Sept. 10, sharing startling statistics about the struggles people are facing.

“Do you realize that almost 50 percent of the people who will turn to the charitable food system during this crisis have never before relied upon the general food system for help?” asked Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO of Feeding America. “Do you realize that’s over 60 million people.”

Gov. Ralph Northam was also in attendance at Friday’s event. He pledged to make funding feeding programs a priority amid the coronavirus pandemic.
