ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — A new cigarette tax will go into effect to kick start the new year in Roanoke County.
The Board of Supervisors says the county will charge $0.25 tax per package starting Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022. This brings them in line with Vinton, which is also $.025, and still keeps the county below Salem, at $0.45 per package, and Roanoke City at $0.54 per package.
The Board of Supervisors also took into the concerns from the county’s business community, but based on the fact that the county is in line or significantly lower than neighboring localities, they decided to proceed with the tax.
The county will use the estimated $250,000 a year for public safety and education.
