ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital earned ‘The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval‘ and the’ American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Stroke Certification,’ becoming the first healthcare system in the region to receive this certification.
“To operate as the only Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center in the region, our skilled NeuroInterventional team provides critical care that dramatically improves outcomes for stroke patients,” said Aashit Shah, M.D., Chief of Neurology at Carilion. “We are proud and honored to achieve this national recognition.”
Medical teams must excel in many different areas in order to earn this prestigious title. Teams must have the tools to perform a mechanical thrombectomy, have neurointensive care, and have 24/7 on-site critical care coverage, among other qualifications.
Carilion Clinic shares that a mechanical thrombectomy is a “minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove a blood clot from an artery in the brain.”
Hospitals need to perform at least 15 mechanical thrombectomy procedures to qualify for this award, Carilion Roanoke Memorial performed 69 of these procedures in 2022.
“We congratulate Carilion for this outstanding achievement,” said Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Stroke Association. “This certification reflects its commitment to providing the highest quality of care for stroke patients.”
