ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Carilion Clinic is creating more space to treat trauma patients in its Crystal Spring Tower that’s currently under construction. They’ll use these rooms to treat trauma patients for things such as severe bleeding or gunshot wounds.

On Tuesday, Feb. 21, they shared a first-hand look at a mock version of what the trauma bays will look like. The mock version, made of cardboard walls, has everything that would normally be seen in a trauma bay. However, these rooms will be a bit larger than the ones they currently have.

Carilion is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center and includes two trauma bays, but they plan to install three more to handle some of the area’s most complex trauma cases.

Doctors say there’s been a higher volume of trauma patients recently, which shows the need for these new trauma patient rooms. Four of the trauma rooms will be for adults, and one will be for children.

Things move very quickly when dealing with traumatic injuries, and officials at Carilion say up to 15 doctors can be working on a single patient at one time. Doctors say they typically get patients in and out within about 20 minutes.

The new facility is expected to be up and running in the tower by the end of summer in 2025.
