ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Big Lick Mental Health Awareness Co. will host a 22k veteran suicide awareness march, known as the Big Lick Ruck next weekend.

The event will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 8 at Wasena Park.

The Big Lick Ruck is a veteran suicide awareness and prevention event that focuses on bringing veterans together to assist in mental health and suicide prevention.

According to event organizers, a “ruck” is a term used in the military for a long-distance hike carrying equipment in “ruck-sacks.” The event is meant to be completed as a group.

The cost is $5 to participate, but additional donations are welcome. The cost also includes food and water. This event is open to veterans and non-service members.

Event organizers will provide masks for participants.

This year, the event organizers have partnered with New Freedom Farm in Buchanan to help
raise funds to further their mission of “Healing Heroes through Horses.”
