ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — What do Spider-Man, Darth Vader, and Sonic the Hedgehog have in common? They all attended Big Lick Comic Con at the Berglund Center on Saturday!

Hundreds of people dressed up as their favorite characters to go to a celebration of pop culture and creativity on Saturday, Aug. 6. The two-day event features character meet and greets, autographs, photo opportunities, vendors, food, and a cosplay contest.

“It’s all about creativity, it’s all about comics, and it’s about pop culture with over two days of fun,” JD Sutphin, the founder of Big Lick Entertainment and the man behind Big Lick Comic Con, said. “When people come together over something, they are super passionate about there is just magic in the air.”

There were plenty of special guests including Marvel Universe comic writer Jim Shooter, Karyn Parsons from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” and Femi Taylor from “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.”

“Everybody needs a hero, we all need something to aspire to.”

“Your job as a cartoonist is to make those people see the same movie you are seeing,” said Shooter.

Shooter gave an interactive lecture on writing comics and the audience had the opportunity to create their own character with the help of an illustrator.

“You can see the parents and the kids flipping out together. You can feel that in the air…it becomes their own little Disney World in Roanoke,” said Sutphin.

Sutphin says that Big Lick Comic Con is a fun-filled event for the entire family.
