ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Roanoke Police Department (RPD) says it has received several calls regarding a bear sighting near the Oakland Blvd and Greenhurst Avenue NW area on May 24th.

Police say, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has been notified and they are looking into the situation.

In the meantime, Roanoke Police advise residents in this area, to keep small children inside and check to their surroundings before going outside.

According to DWR, bears are highly adaptable and intelligent animals and if you see one you should do the following:

  • Keep a respectful distance, in most cases, the bear will move on quickly
  • Do not approach
  • Never run

Anyone who sees the bear is asked to call DWR at 855-571-9003. WFXR News will update you as details become available.
