Aviation boot camp puts 8th graders in the cockpit at Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Some eighth-graders had a chance to fly high at the Roanoke Blacksburg Regional Aiport.

It was part of the aviation boot camp that the students from Salem City Schools were able to attend. The students were able to experience simulators, hands-on experiments, and even a flight simulator. Organizers say they’re hoping to get kids interested in careers in aviation.

“We’re introducing them to much more about aviation than you normally think of. Introduced to a little bit of engineering, basic electrical theory, and the flight aspects,” said Anthony Whitehead, relations and engagement specialist with Nextgen Aviators.

Nextgen says they also had a lot of representatives there from universities and agencies that deal with all aspects of flight, including Liberty University’s School of Aeronautics and Air Force Recruiters.
