ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Southwest Virginia shelters want to make sure people who are living on the streets have a place to go during the wintry weather.

“Weather events can be extremely dangerous for folks who sleep outside,” said Kevin Berry, community outreach and marketing manager of the Rescue Mission of Roanoke.

Berry says the doors to the mission are always open to those in need.

“Whether you have been to our shelter before or if you have never been there, we will welcome you with open arms,” said Berry.

Berry says the mission’s objective is to make sure those in need know the location of a safe place.

“We know that the safest place to be especially during a snowstorm or a weather event is indoors,” said Berry.

Across town, The Least of These Ministries will have a unique place for folks to lay their heads.

“We have a warming bus,” said The Least of These Ministries’ founder, Dawn Sandoval.

According to Sandoval, folks will be provided with everything they need when riding the warming bus.

“We provide snacks and we have blankets on board for people to cover up and sleep. It’s heated and it has lights,” said Sandoval.

Sandoval says if you see someone in need, don’t hesitate to help.

“Especially in these cold temperatures, if they see someone outside in this precipitation or in these teens or or 20s temperatures, please have them reach out to some resource,” said Sandoval.

Roanoke Mayor Sherman Lea is working with community leaders, including Sandoval, to create some sort of camp for the homeless population in the city. The goal is to provide safety, especially during times like these.
